ABOUT YOUR DOG

BASIC BODY SIGNS

Just as you need to be careful about what signals you send your dog, you also need to be alert to the signs he’s sending you. Here’s a key to some basic body language that you may see your dog using.

SIGNS THAT YOUR DOG IS FEELING STRESSED OR UNCOMFORTABLE

• Tongue flicking—just a quick flick of the tongue over his nose.

• Turning away, sniffing the ground—he isn’t being obstinate or ignoring you, he’s telling you that he’s out of his comfort zone. To another dog, this would be an appeasement signal (“I’m not a threat, I’m just over here, doing my own thing”).

• Yawning—in an active context, this isn’t a sign that he’s tired; instead, it tends to indicate that he’s feeling anxious.

• Looking away—dogs make much less frequent eye contact than humans anyway (they interpret a direct, long look as confrontational), but if your dog is actively avoiding your eye, he’s sending you a message that he isn’t enjoying the activity you’re working on with him, and that it’s time for a break.
